Since 2007, XXL Magazine has been releasing a yearly list of the hottest hip-hop artists to come out within the year. This year, honorees included the likes of Lil Pump, BlocBoy JB, Smokepurpp, Steflon Don, Trippie Redd, and many more. Social media reacted with a mutual feeling of disapproval, hoping that some of their personal favorite artists would be included. Of course, these are all opinion based, but here are some of our favorites who did not make this year's freshman list.
Jaden Smith
Young Smitto has had the entire universe feeling like young icons. Don't think this is this young man's first time touching a mic. After being featured on Justin Bieber's, Never Say Never in 2010, Jaden has gone on to take the world by storm with two mixtapes The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1 in 2012 and Cool Tape Vol. 2 in 2014. His debut album, Syre released in 2017, and his upcoming project Syre: The Electric Album will drop on Smith's 20th birthday, July 8th.
Lil Baby
A Drake feature never hurt any artist in the QC (Quality Control) camp, but when you are Lil Baby, you seemly know how to hold your own. After running the streets and not wanting to rap initially, Baby caught the bug after being coerced by members of the Migos, and Coach K and Pee, the brains behind, Quality Control. Right out the gate, Baby has blessed us with three mixtapes and an album, Harder Than Ever. Those projects feature anthems such as "Freestyle", "My Dawg", and "A-Town". All tapes making us say, "Yes Indeed" he should have been a freshman.
King Combs
Don't let the very stark resemblance between him and his father fool you. King Combs and his rap collective, CYN, are on a winning streak to make sure the public remembers their name. After dropping his mixtape, 90's Baby, and featuring the single, Love You Better, with Chris Brown, Combs is not slowly down anytime soon.
Gunna
There is no doubt that Atlanta breeds talented music artists, and this one is no different. Gunna is a 25 year old rapper from College Park, Georgia who is known for running with Young Thug. He has taken over the streets with his own sound and is quickly forming a following who is waiting for his next move. Since 2016, he has released three mix-ups, Drip Season, Drip Season 2, Drip Season 3, and is gearing up to drop a collab tape with Lil Baby, Drip Harder.
