On May 25, 2020, yet another African American man died by the hands of a white police officer. His name was George Floyd. He allegedly wrote a bad check in a store, leading to police coming on the scene, and later he died. Video surfaced showing the police officer Dereck Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over 5 minutes while he pleaded for his life. Floyd’s death has sparked outrage all over the country, but anger is seen the most in Minneapolis where he was killed. Black people are tired of having to see a black man die because the police doesn’t see him as human. Not only is George Floyd’s death sickening, but in the last month there have been a string of blacks being killed either by the hands of white police officers or white supremacists. Racism is such a diseases that even in the midst of a pandemic, the hatred for blacks is prominent.
The most disturbing thing about Floyd’s death is how whites took to social media platforms to justify the cop kneeling on Floyd’s neck by saying “If he can talk, he can breathe”. This statement said by so many whites shows how they feel as though the life of a black man is disposable. This is why the Black Lives Matter Movement exists. America does not see the value of a black man’s life or black person in general so they kill us. America doesn’t see the reason behind our anger, riots, and protest. Even the president only saw the violence behind the riots in Minneapolis and not the message. It is so disheartening to see blacks having to protest for a life no one feel is important. We’re living in a country designed for the oppression of blacks. We never were seen as human and never will be. The death of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others will not go unheard of. Blacks have finally reached their breaking point and America needs to watch out because no longer will the injustice against blacks be tolerated.
