Kevin Lee, otherwise known as Coach K has become a staple in the hip-hop industry after being one of the forces behind the careers of acts such as Migos, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, and the City Girls. Coach K is the co-founder and chief operating officer of the Atlanta record label, Quality Control. After millions of records sold and millions dollars made, one might think, “what else is there for Coach to do?” Well as of May 2020, he is officially an alumnus of St. Augustine’s University, a private historically Black college in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In the early 90’s, Coach K, was a student at St. Augustine University, but after being injured via a gunshot wound, he ultimately dropped out of the university. 29 years later, he was able to finish his degree in May of 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. After attending his college’s homecoming, Coach K was inspired to enroll back into St. Augustine’s to receive his bachelor’s degree in organizational management. When speaking on the decision to go back to school, Coach said, “the truth of the matter [is], finishing college always sits in the back of my head but if my accident wouldn’t have happened where I would be. So I re-entered school 28 years after I was supposed to graduate and enrolled back into [HBCU] Saint Augustine University, the school I was supposed to graduate [from] in 1993.”
This past weekend Lee was able to receive an honorary doctorate degree of humane letters from his alma mater. As a devoted alumnus, Lee was able to donate a recording studio to his university in 2019, leaving behind a trail of inspiration for future students who want to step into the music industry.
