The BET Awards is the unofficial Black family reunion. Black people gather on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites alike to crack jokes, review outfits, and genuinely tweet about the award show throughout the night. On Sunday, June 25th, the 17th annual BET Awards was held in Los Angeles, California which celebrated African-Americans in music, television, sports, and cinema. This year in particular, the BET Awards had a lot of performances. Here are the best to worst ranked!
1. New Edition
New Edition started off the year with an amazing run. Performing their life story on BET over the course of three nights and securing over one billion social media interactions and 30 million viewers. The cast of The New Edition Story began by celebrating them performing their individual hits, even the little baby boys. Algee Smith looked like a complete snack as he performed Ralph Tresvant's "Sensitivity", Luke James was a dark chocolate god among men performing Johnny Gill's "My, My, My", Woody McClain was Bobby Brown as he performed "My Perogative" and Elijah Kelly, Keith Powers, and Bryshere Gray were BBD as they performed "Poison". I became such a bigger fan of New Edition throughout these past six months. I literally lost my mind when I saw all 18 "members" on stage in all white. Our boys looked amazing.
2. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars had one of the top ten albums of 2016. Every song was a hit including, but not limited to, "That's What I Like", "24K Magic", and "Chunky", and that's just one third of the album. He performed "Perm" on Sunday and had the attention of everybody in the crowd.
3. Migos
Putting Migos 3rd after Bruno Mars was insanely too hard. Migos literally had the entire award show standing on their feet and dancing along to every song. The entire audience was feeling Bad and Boujee in their T-Shirts.
4. DJ Khaled ft. Chance The Rapper, Quavo, & Lil Wayne
2 words: Asahd Khaled.
5. Xscape
It was wonderful to see such an iconic group but their differences aside and come back together. They not one sounded amazing, but looked amazing as well on that stage. Tiny came through with them post divorce vocals and sang the shit out of "Understanding".
6. SZA
SZA has been making a lot of noise these past couples of weeks with the release of her new album and I honestly see why. I loved every song she performed.
7. Tamar Braxton
Tamar not only came through with the vocals, but the wig flip as well. Her hairstylist needs a major way. I'm excited to see where this album goes.
8. French Montana/Swae Lee
Mississippi's finest Swae Lee on the hook of the most melodic song of the summer.
9. Future and Kendrick Lamar
Future came through with K.Dot and performed one of the hottest songs of the summer. Next to Migos and French, Future had one of the cleanest sets of the entire show. Fire, chandeliers, and black women.
10. Khalid
It was nice to see him perform on the Nissan stage and to see his swagger come out during it.
11. Big Sean
I was more of a fan of his 2015 BET Awards performance but I did love his freestyle at the end of "Bounce Back". It was amazing. I love it when our rappers are cognizant of their roles in social justice works.
12. Mary J. Blige and A$AP Rocky
Mary is the aunty of aunty. She looked amazing on stage. I was surprised to see Rocky, honestly.
13. Trey Songz
Nice gowns. Beautiful gowns.
14. Chris Brown
I am certain that Breezy must own some stake in BET. He performs every year.
15. Maxwell
He still got it. I personally wanted to hear, "This Woman's Work".
