Death Row Records was founded in 1992 by security guard turned music executive, Suge Knight. Before Snoop Dogg dropped his debut album Doggystyle in 1993, the label only had one release, Dr. Dre's The Chronic. Years after the label's historic 90's run, and tumultuous demise, Snoop Dogg has retaken the reigns of the iconic record label.
With their roster of stars, Death Row Records ruled the 90's. Being the home of acts such as The D.O.C, MC Hammer, and Tupac Shakur, they were able to drop projects such as; the Above The Rim soundtrack, Tupac's All Eyez On Me, and Snoop's album Murder Was The Case.
Snoop acquired Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group. As the new owner, Snoop has said, "“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value. It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me. I would like to personally thank the teams at Blackstone, MNRK and especially David Kestnbaum, who worked collaboratively with me over several months to make this exciting homecoming a reality. I’m looking forward to building the next chapter of Death Row Records.” Snoop is also gearing up to release a brand new album, Back On Death Row on February 11th.
Before acquiring Death Row Records, Snoop Dogg joined Def Jam Records as an executive creative and strategic consultant in 2021.
